We have been exploring your personal power in the world; and we have talked about the 3 things that impact this power: attitude, approach and actions.

What you do (your action) is the visible application of your attitude and approach. And it is what you do (the cause) that achieves your material results in the world (the effect). Your world is therefore a mirror of what you do. Are you in charge of what the world (mirror) is reflecting back to you? Are you on the cause side of the equation?

The cause:

5 questions that keep you in charge.

Purpose: What do I want to achieve?

Once you know where you are going, you have a starting point for action. Your ‘purpose’ acts as a map to guide your journey forward. Many of us forget to set an end point when we begin our ‘busyness’. And as that famous philosopher Pooh Bear says: ‘If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you get there?’

Precision: How will I know when I have got there?

To decide how you will measure your results gives you the emotional impetus to start your journey. When you are clear about how you will measure your results, the road towards them becomes clearer.

Productivity: What do I need to do?

This is the point at which you decide how you will best use your energy and effort. You start by considering the actions you think will best achieve your purpose, by asking ‘what do I do’ and then prioritising the steps.

Process: How do I do this?

It is not what you do, but how you do it that determines your final result. For example, if you decide that you will communicate with your manager about something you wish to change in your department, you might want to consider how you will go about that communication: face to face, by email, with aggression, more assertively, by pleading your case?

Progress: What more is there?

This is the point at which you consider whether a new, more innovative approach might have more impact in helping you to achieve your results.

The effect:

2 questions determine the impact of what you do.

Patronage: Who am I in service of?

Who is your customer, who will benefit from what you are doing? When you become clear about this, you know more of how to target your actions.

Positioning: How will this work in the world?

And finally, if you spend some time envisioning how your actions will ‘play’ in the world, you can be more sure that the mirror the world reflects back to you is in accord with your vision and purpose.
